Only part of the smug expression on Admiral's face was due to the attention his latest promotion graced him with. It was even better than being a captain, a role he had held for far too long. The latest work he had done resulted in days of deliberation with the Starfleet Medical Board over unethical practices, and the doctor would have gotten away with it if Admiral hadn't clocked the inconsistencies between medical reports. To watch that man's face go white as a sheet made the whole endeavour worth it.
No, he had other reasons to be smug. The murmur of an audit caught his attention, and it was only a matter of time before he submitted his expression of interest. He was only partly intrigued by the fact that a starship was being audited after the disaster that occurred at the Unification Accords. She was there. Admiral had checked to be sure it was the same person, and only submitted his interest once he was certain. He couldn't pass up an opportunity to simply... check in on an old colleague.
Meeting the other auditor came first, Admiral decided with only a hint of disappointment.
Dante was found in Sugarplum Cafe sipping from a cup filled with a liquid that looked suspiciously like blood if one looked at it too long. In front of him sat the half finished breakfast he had been working on. Before Admiral could even approach Dante's gaze found him and his face took on a hint of sternness. "How can I help you... Mr.?"
"Beache," was the response. Admiral didn't wait for an invitation, instead sliding a chair out and sitting with almost pompous authority. "Mister Ambrogio, correct? I hear we are to be working together."
Dante raised a brow, surveying the man before him. He put down the cup of coffee he had been nursing and eyed Beache warily. "That depends on what exactly you are here to do..."
The self-invited guest gave a smile that wasn't particularly kind. It was the tight-lipped expression one might give to delegates or other pains in the asses, only forged through experince. "By rank, it's technically oversight, but I am merely an available set of hands."
Dante examined him closely again and nodded "what interest in this audit do you have, Commodore? Individuals of your rank rarely operate in the field and almost never let themselves be seen conducting any form of audit." His words were dry, emotionless and carried the silent judgement that only an Italian can give.
Instead of answering, Admiral waved down a server and asked for some tea. He watched her leave, pausing for just a second to eye her figure, before returning his attention to the commander across the table from him. "I specialise in medical audits, Commander. It's one of the few jobs that lets me remain in the field instead of banishing me to some god-forsaken desk in a stuffy office." He paused as the tea arrived, a breath of silence expanding between them as he added milk and stirred. "There is also a personal matter I must attend to that may benefit the audit."
"Personal matters and professionalism rarely mix well. But; I am listening." Dante took a drag from his cup and leaned back as he listened.
Admiral chuckled at that, though it held the same tight-lipped scrutiny as the earlier smile. "I heard that an old friend is aboard, and I simply wanted to make sure she hadn't forgotten about me." He paused to take a sip of his tea, nodding to himself when the flavour was satisfactory. "I know how to ensure that she complies."
"You'll do nothing untoward during the audit if you are to assist. I will absolutely have you removed from the Astrea if I hear of anything." Dante's voice was stern, carrying all the weight of someone used to command, used to being heard and listened to.
He let the words hang for a few moments, eyeing Beache dangerously. As the moments stretched on; just as they were threatening to become like minutes he broke the silence again. "That being said; tell me what exactly you can do for the audit. I will need someone to head up the Medical side of the audit but I need to know more about your intents and goals... and how far I can trust you with the audit."
Admiral chuckled at Dante's sternness, the glare ineffective. He didn't get to the rank of commodore by submitting every time someone gave him a nasty look or some words that were barely within regulation. To receive it from someone 4 ranks below him... well, it was cute. "I am a man of justice, Mr. Ambrogio. I only intend to provide my services as an experienced medical professional. I know medical systems like the back of my hand, so if there is anything to find, I can find it. That's it."
Dante was unphased by the lack of reaction; he had meant exactly what he said and he knew that he would follow through if it became necessary. Instead he matched Admiral's gaze with a steady and firm one of his own. "If we are in agreement then I am happy to have the assist with the Audit. Just remember... by the book."
By the book. The one thing he placed any integrity toward was the rules. Admiral gave a single tilt of the head in acknowledgement. "By the book. It will be a pleasure to work with you."
Dante put his attention back on his drink and picked up the PaDD that lay beside him on the table; letting Admiral do whatever he would and praying the man would go elsewhere. Rapidly.
