| Physical Description | Secord is a strikingly handsome man who has aged into his appearance rather than away from it. At 61, he's still tall and decently built, carrying himself confidently. His short brown hair is parted neatly on the side, with a modest pompadour at the front, and grey has begun to stain the hair around his temples and along the front of his scalp. A broad lampshade mustache--now predominantly grey--adorns his upper lip. He has slightly longer sideburns that give him an old-fashioned quality that suits him well. His emerald-green eyes are unusually vivid and warm. He dresses impeccably without appearing overly vain about it, and his easy smile is one of the things for which he most recognizable. He knows perfectly well that he's attractive and has never entirely lost the ability the enjoy the effect he has on people, particularly women considerably younger than himself. He's sufficiently experienced to know when attention is genuine, political, or just based on curiosity. |

Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Secord is charismatic in the old-fashioned sense of the word. People like being around him. He listens attentively, laughs easily, remembers personal details, and possesses a rare ability to make someone feel that a conversation matters even when he's already decided what he intends to do. He is neither loud nor theatrical. His authority comes from an almost effortless confidence and from decades of experience finding himself in situations where the stakes were high enough that everyone else quit pretending to be comfortable. He is genuinely intelligent, highly competent, and extraordinarily experienced. Secord has little patience for officers who confuse regulations with judgment, but he has even less patience for officers who believe their personal convictions exempt them from responsibility. He believes command is ultimately about consequences--someone must be willing to accept responsibility when the clean solution doesn't exist. That belief has served him well throughout his career. It has also become the foundation upon which he has built something considerably darker. Secord is not a cynic. In fact, one of the more unsettling things about him is that he still genuinely believes in the Federation. He loves Starfleet, respects its history, and can speak passionately about its ideals. His problem is that he has come to believe those ideals are insufficient protection against the realities of interstellar power. Over the years, he has convinced himself that Starfleet's institutions have become too cumbersome, too transparent, and too constrained by principle to protect the civilization they created. Someone, he believes, has to be willing to make decisions that cannot be made in public. Secord has gradually become one of those people. |
