1,003 words; about a 5 minute read
Mission:
Maintenance and Recovery
Location: Counsellor’s Office
Timeline: Prior to sand and service part I
" And if you need any help, just let me know." Leani said as her patient left the room. Running her fingers through her hair, she returned to her office, taking a seat at her desk. Her black eyes looked over the picture of her family. The family she wouldn't change for anything.
Hearing a knock at her door, she looked up. The face was unknown, other than from the transfer report sitting on her desk. Kah'lyn Chiara, her new boss, had arrived.
" Hey." The Betazoid said, jumping to her feet. " Sorry I didn't hear that you'd arrived. I was busy with a patient for the last hour."
Kah’lyn offered a warm smile, she hated coming in and feeling like she was taking over from a Counsellor who was doing her job. “Not to worry, you were busy doing what you’re here to do. I’d be more concerned if you weren’t doing anything and I didn’t find you here. With the exception of shoreleave of course.”
" Well i can assure you that isn't happening. Come in." The betazoid said as she led the way to her desk. She noted Kah'lyn eyes, noting the sensory deprivation tank against the wall, but her eyes were mostly fixed on the holo images on her desk. The holo vid currently showed an image of her, Xalanth, T'para, and Zola back at the academy. " My imzadi and two of my sister wives," she explained.
“Sister wives?” Kah’lyn smiled. “That’s an unusual relationship, but if it makes you happy then that’s what matters.” She looked to the tank against the wall. “Is this for sensory deprivation? I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never actually seen one before.”
" Yes i was recommended it for my eldest daughter when her empathic abilities started to activate. " The betazoid explained. " Found it rather useful for certain sessions, especially with psychiatric patients. "
“Really? I’d like to learn more about that.” Kah’lyn replied. “So how is your daughter coping? Having her abilities start early must be difficult for both of you?”
" As well as she can. She suffers from Travla Kazanta Syndrome. She just had the surgery to relive pressure on the part of her brain that allows her to talk." She replied with the hint of a mother worried for her daughter in her tone.
Kah’lyn nodded. “I remember reading about that when I did my training, it’s quite rare from what I recall. I wouldn’t worry with medical tech the way it is there’s nothing they can’t do.”
" The surgery has gone well. It's so nice that she can sing." Lelani added with a warm smile. " Forgive me i always like talking about my family. Would you like to see the crew's psych profiles?"
Kah’lyn couldn’t help but grin. “You don’t need to apologise, not one little bit. If I had kids I’d be proud of them too. As for the profiles I did take a look over some of them enroute to here, I’d like to know more about recent patients. Are there any in particular that you’d like me to see?”
" Yes that would be Josef. " The betazoid said as she picked up not one but three padds. " A guest from WW3 earth. I've done my best, but he is still adjusting to his odd situation. "
“WW3? The eugenics wars.” Kah’lyn remembered reading about that in her studies. “I can imagine how difficult adjusting to our timeline must be for him.” She politely took the PaDDs giving them a curious glance through. “I’ll read through these and digest before I meet him, how is he doing so far?”
" He smuggled a firearm into a diplomatic function. He's doing better now, but there’s so few of these cases to know for sure." Leilani replied honestly.
Kah’lyn nodded. “Of course. I’ll try dropping by to see him and see how he’s feeling. I’ll need to be cautious though he’s only just discovered that aliens exist. It must be so overwhelming for him.”
" He's handling it better than expected from my view, but i've never had a case like this." Lelani added.
“That makes two of us” Kah’lyn grinned. “I guess we fly by seat of pants, as the saying goes.”
" Indeed. I hope we can help him. I can't even begin to image what's he's going through." replied the Betazoid.
“To be displaced out of your own time, thrown into future you’re not prepared for, it must be a nightmare” Kah’lyn added.
"Indeed," the Betazoid replied with a nod.
“Well it’s up to us to ensure that he finds a way to integrate” Kah’lyn smiled a wry smile. “I have a feeling we’ll be kept busy.”
The Betazoid nodded. " My shift is about to end in five minutes would you like me to send over the case work for you to have a read through?" She asked
“I’d appreciate that, thank you” Kah’lyn smiled and nodded. “I won’t keep you much longer, don’t worry. It’s just as important for us to get our break from the daily routine.”
Leilani made a brief stop to her computer to send over the files before heading for the door. " I'll see you later."
Kah’lyn nodded. “Of course, and thank you for the files I’ll look them over.”

*ooc: azanta syndrome. It happens rarely with Betazoid hybrids, her brain wiring is a little messed up. Her paracortex is rather large and presses onto the rest of her brain.
