Waking to find his First and Second mates still asleep, Xalanth begins his first “virtue day” with Zola, his third mate. After sharing a warm embrace in their quarters, he surprises her with plans to go swimming—knowing it’s her favorite activity. The pair walk hand-in-hand to the Academy’s private beach, where Zola teases and kisses him before racing into the surf. Though Xalanth is still adjusting to Earth’s vast oceans compared to his native Dragonian shallows, he follows her into the depths. Together they dive to an old shuttle wreck used as a training site, Zola leading with easy grace, Xalanth steady and protective. In the quiet beneath the waves, Xalanth reflects on his lineage, his growing place on Earth, and the joy of being with his mate—secure in the honor of their bond.
