The Last Door on Earth, Part I
Timeline: 6 Weeks AgoLocation: San Francisco, Earth; Starfleet Headquarters
Characters Present:
- Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil
- Commander Birzruk
- Admiral Lachlan Spyvee
Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil undertakes a deeply personal and symbolic transition as he leaves Starfleet Intelligence behind. The story opens with JB swimming in the San Francisco Bay before dawn, using the ritualistic motion of the water to ground himself and process trauma from recent operations. The narrative juxtaposes the enduring architecture of the Golden Gate Bridge with Alcatraz Island, highlighting his internal struggle between duty and morality.
Returning to his quarters, JB confronts the emotional and ethical fallout from the Bryn'kal Three operation, including the deaths of civilians and Starfleet personnel under his orders. He prepares for a meeting with Commander Birzruk at Starfleet Strategic Operations, reflecting on his desire to leave Intelligence in favor of a role where “truth is still a currency.”
During the meeting, Birzruk offers JB a position analyzing Nausicaan activity in the Lekethra Corridor. Before a formal discussion can conclude, Admiral Lachlan Spyvee intervenes, asserting authority and challenging JB to justify his resignation. Through their dialogue, JB confronts the moral compromises of his work, acknowledging the psychological toll of executing orders that result in mass casualties. Spyvee affirms JB’s competence while warning him of the limitations and consequences of leaving Intelligence.
The encounter concludes with JB formally resigning, placing his combadge on the desk as a symbolic act of liberation. Spyvee allows the resignation to stand but cautions that JB will no longer serve on Earth or the Federation core worlds under his influence. JB emerges from the meeting with a sense of autonomy, prepared to pursue a path defined by conscience rather than authority.
