The Open Door, Part 2

In his quarters aboard Starbase 718, Jean-Baptiste contacts his sister Angeline via holoscreen, exchanging affectionate teasing, memories of childhood, and updates on her life with newborn twins. She encourages him to plan for his new life aboard a starship and to stop seeing himself as a ghost of his former Intelligence career. After the call ends, JB feels the hollowness of his quarters and heads for the Hub, Starbase 718’s sprawling commerce and transit nexus. Among the flow of travelers and two docked Klingon warships, tensions rise when a Klingon warrior accuses a Yridian merchant of cheating and nearly throws him over a balcony. JB steps in, using sharp Klingon insults to draw the warrior’s attention and prevent the assault. Security intervenes before the confrontation turns deadly, and JB faces a pointed rebuke for risking his life unarmed. The incident leaves him reflective—aware that his instincts to act without orders remain intact, but also that he is no longer shielded by Intelligence’s structure or secrecy.

Days later, aboard the Federation transport Magellan en route to Barisa Prime, JB endures cramped quarters and a restless mind. He observes families and travelers passing by but feels disconnected from them, keeping company only with tea and a paper notebook. In it, he writes about stars seen from a box, his life adrift and waiting. Ahead lies the USS Astrea, a new assignment on the frontier that might offer both purpose and freedom. As the Magellan slips through warp, JB senses that his past may finally be receding and that his next chapter, uncertain but unburdened, is about to begin.
