Liminal Spaces
Timeline: One Week into Layover, following The Open Door, Part 2Location: Barisa Prime, shoreline and Federation Campus Visiting Officers' Quarters
Characters Present:
- Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil
- Judeline Toussaint St-Eloi
During his layover on Barisa Prime, Jean-Baptiste rises early to visit the shoreline. The mineral-dense sea, calm and nearly mirror-like, offers him a rare opportunity to float and swim, letting his mind wander while his body remains buoyed. He reflects on his recent career upheaval, the lingering echoes of Bryn’kal III, and the subtle pressures of having once worked in Starfleet Intelligence. For the first time in weeks, he allows himself to simply exist, grounding his awareness in the rhythm of breath, water, and the soft stirrings of the world around him.
Later, in his quarters on the Federation Campus, JB connects via subspace to his mother, Judeline, in Bainet. Their conversation blends teasing, familial affection, and sober reflection on his choices and recent experiences. She observes the changes in him, noting the weight in his expression and the subtle weariness behind his eyes, and encourages him to be gentle with himself. The conversation emphasizes the importance of stillness, self-compassion, and the intermediary spaces between past and future. Through their exchange, JB feels a momentary lifting of the burdens that have accompanied him since leaving Intelligence and anticipates the forthcoming assignment aboard the USS Astrea with a tentative optimism.
