Synopsis:

On First Contact Day, the Six-Gamma dorm lounge smells of burnt popcorn and synthale as first-years stage an illicit chess-drinking tournament. Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil, older than most cadets and serving as Dormitory Advisor, steps in to enforce Starfleet’s harm reduction protocols, ensuring anti-inebriation tablets are taken before the fun becomes disaster. He teases Alvarez about his inevitable hangover and leaves the lounge just as smoothly as he arrived.

In the corridor, Cadet Th’rassel sh’Varess nearly barrels into him, spiraling over a midterm grade dispute. Rather than offer logic, JB steers her into the kitchenette, grounding her with gentle presence and guiding her through tapping exercises to restore her composure. Further down the hall, he encounters Cadet Lodwick, whose too-tight replicated uniforms have once again failed him; JB advises him to size up and save the showing-off for the gym.

Finally reaching his quarters, JB finds Jacqueline Holder waiting—brilliant, magnetic, and impossible to ignore. She kisses him, teasing about his uniform and his sense of duty, and for a moment he allows himself to be simply a man, not an advisor. Their intimacy is interrupted by Surlek, who walks in with Vulcan bluntness, leaving JB flustered and Jacq amused as she departs. Pulling on his uniform for the parade grounds, JB feels, however briefly, like someone who might be loved as much for who he is as for what he does.
