On a foggy morning above San Francisco Bay, a group of Starfleet cadets gathers aboard a ferry bound for Alcatraz Island to attempt the Academy’s annual endurance challenge: a 2.5-kilometer open-water swim back to the mainland. Among them is Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil, quiet and introspective, watching the gray water shimmer like hammered metal beneath a gauze of mist. Across the deck, Jacqueline Holder wrestles with her wetsuit and her nerves, laughing to herself before asking the tall cadet nearby for help with her zipper.

That simple request—the touch of his hand at the back of her neck, the warmth of her voice, the shared laughter that follows—sets something in motion neither fully understands. They exchange names and origins: she from Barbados, he from Bainet, Haiti. Their shared island roots and easy humor draw them together as naturally as the tide. Before the race begins, she invites him for breakfast afterward—“no pressure, just coffee and war stories”—and he accepts with quiet wonder.

As the race marshal calls the start, Jacqueline dives first, a shriek of exhilaration leaving her lips as the cold water takes her. JB lingers a few seconds longer, watching her disappear into the waves before whispering something meant only for the sea. Then he dives after her, chasing not just the shore, but the spark she left behind.
