Breakfast at the Edge of the Bay, Part 1
Timeline: 11 October 2381, Late Morning
Location: Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco, Earth
Characters Present:
- Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil
- Jacqueline Holder
Morning settles over Fisherman’s Wharf like a half-forgotten song—salt air, slow sunlight, and the echo of ship horns over the bay. Still damp from the Alcatraz swim, Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil meets Jacqueline Holder for breakfast at a small terrace café near the Embarcadero. They sit among mismatched mugs and cooling croissants, trying to pretend it’s not a date.
Over coffee and the squawk of gulls, their conversation drifts from teasing to confessional. Jacqueline admits she chases challenges for the thrill of proving the world wrong. JB, in turn, reveals the invisible walls he built growing up in Bainet—walls meant to keep him safe, but which also kept him separate. He speaks of the weight of small-town expectations, of being known too well, of needing distance to remember his own voice.
