Best Two-out-of-Three, Part 2
Timeline: October 11, 2381 – 1620 Hours
Location: 17th Street, The Castro, San Francisco, Earth
Characters Present:
- Jean-Baptiste Dorsainvil
- Jacqueline Holder
Jacqueline’s playful energy keeps their walk alive with motion—skipping, spinning, and weaving stories from thin air. She imagines herself an alien among humans, a traveller through centuries. Jean-Baptiste joins her game with quiet grace, picturing himself as a lighthouse keeper on a remote planet where dark-green seas lean instead of crash, and the only other presence is a voice that doesn’t need to fill the silence. Their conversation becomes something more intimate than whimsy—an exploration of what loneliness means, and what kind of company feels like light.
When she asks what contentment looks like for him, JB admits he’s never sought peace so much as persistence, the effort to “stay alight.” In return, Jacqueline paints her own world of constant adventure, always in motion, always rescuing others. The exchange leaves them both smiling, suspended somewhere between make-believe and confession.
A flash of movement—an approaching streetcar—sends them running down the block. The rush of shared laughter, the brush of her shoulder near his, and the sound of their uneven footsteps fold into something electric and new. They make it aboard just in time, collapsing into seats with matching breathless grins. The streetcar’s hum rocks them into an easy quiet as the city drifts by in gold and shadow. For the first time that day, words fall away, replaced by the comfortable rhythm of two people quietly arriving at the edge of something that feels like beginning.
