1,476 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Peril at the Unification Accords
Location: Holodeck 3 - U.S.S. Astrea
Timeline: MD11 0700

Alex rolled out of bed, not having slept a wink since arriving back at her quarters. The isolinear chip that she had loaded everything from her experiment in the lab taunted her from the shelf beside the bed. She had the remnants of dark circles under her eyes from recovery but she turned and stepped into the bathroom, slapping on some very basic cosmetics to lighten them after scrubbing her face for a moment. Her mind was a broiling cauldron of excitement, anxiety, and nerves. After dressing in her uniform, she was a stickler for duty and protocol whether she was working or not at the moment.

After a minute she stepped to the table and scrawled a quick note to Elizabeth to let her know that she would be back later. Her daughter had spent some time fretting over her during her recovery and she had all but had to shove her out to go do her usual activities but she was grateful nonetheless.

She tapped her commbadge as she placed the note where it would be obvious and waited for the channel to open. =/\= Blackstone to Captain Johanssen. =/\=

The response from the Captain was returned after a short few seconds delay.

[Johansen here, Go ahead, Doctor. What can I do for you.]

=/\=Captain, I have important information that you should see... it is a little bit unorthodox but can you meet me at Holodeck 3... and bring Dr. Siv? She is going to want to see it as well... I don't suggest any further knowledge between the three of us for the time being though...=/\= Alex exhaled a bated breath as the worlds flowed from her lips and she fingered the edge of the Isolinear chip.

[I'll be right there, Doctor. Let me find Dr. Siv first.] Remy's response came swiftly. The Captain wasn't sure if the Vulcans would find Blackstone's decision to meld with T'Varel as controversial as Dr. Siv seemed to think that it should be, but if Dr. Blackstone found anything useful, it would certainly serve to protect her if there were any inquiry.

Alex departed her quarters and headed direct to the Holodeck, Isolinear Chip in hand. It only took her a couple of minutes to arrive. She didn't have to wait long though it still was a tense few moments until her companions arrived.

Eventually Captain Johansen arrived followed almost immediately by Dr. Siv.

"So you said something about information to see?" Remy asked asked Dr. Blackstone as Jezra was arriving.

Alex held up the chip in her hand and nodded. "Aye, Captain. I have compiled the information I garnered from the Ambassador into this chip and it should be able to create a holographic recreation of my experiences."

"A holographic recreation?" Remy repeated, looking somewhat dubious. "See what you saw? In the mindmeld?"

"Exactly, Captain. My... research played an instrumental role in retrieving this from my synapses." Alex nodded as she spoke, offering only a grave and stony look.

Jezra was not keen on indulging curiosity. Her arms were crossed across her chest, expression composed into something not unlike neutral bedside manner. A headache from days of frayed sleep settled in at the base of her neck. Conversations she hadn't wanted to have kept stress in her shoulders.

She didn't want to be here, less so with the sources of her exhaustion.

Questions were running through Jezra's mind. What was this research Alex was working on? What had been offered so far made it sound medical in nature, which meant that Alex worked while under suspension. Did Remy have something to do with this? Was Jezra's own authority meaningless? A faint scrunch of her brow was the only visible sign of interest, because she wanted answers. "You saw something." With the subtle tension in her tone, it wasn't a question.

"I did. This was the only way I could think of to share that information accurately." Alex replied calmly, coolly, glancing to Jezra for a minute. "I wanted you here as I know I have put you in a tenuous position, perhaps moreso of one than even the Captain. That being said, this is information that I don't trust to share with anyone outside of present company... there is... alot of implications with this."

"Let's see it," Remy stated, her tone direct.

For just a moment, Siv really wanted to acknowledge the privilege of being included with enough sarcasm to power a runabout. Jezra instead pressed her lips together as she waited for what Alex had to share.

Alex opened the control panel for the Holodeck and insert the chip she had been carrying; configuring things properly. After a moment the computer chirped that the holodeck was ready and she approached the door, stepping in. "Fair warning; this might be a little bit disorienting as everything is from the Ambassador's point of view. We will be essentially walking through her memories."

Jezra fought the wave of nausea that came from artificially induced motion sickness as they entered the program. They uncrossed their arms mainly for balance as their body recalibrated to the new environment.

The program began as a sort of nebulous blankness. Shifting mist and brilliant white light was all that was visible for some time and then slowly an image resolved, though it was blurry around the edges. With nauseating speed images flashed and then resolved for a moment before solidifying into a classroom that appeared to be from the perspective of a student.

Alex shook her head and looked to the others. "Well, it is going to be disorienting... lets see if I can make this a little more tolerable." She stepped to the console and adjusted some parameters and the image zoomed out a bit so that they were a third party observer. "I don't know that I can adjust much more, my apologies."

Slowly the arid dryness of Vulcan filled the air and the surroundings took on a slight orangish glow from the simulated Vulcan sun streaming into one window. After another moment or two the scene flashed and blurred into various streams of color before resolidifying in T'Varel's suite on Barisa Prime.

Jezra prided themselves on being able to handle the nauseating effects of the holodeck programs, spacewalks, and the like. This was certainly challenging that track record. Maybe it was the flashing at the beginning, not at all helped by the backlog of sleep they were trying to catch up on. Jezra walked over to Alex, curiosity overriding the petty grudge for the moment, to take a peek at the PADD.

"What were those flashes before we got here?" Remy asked, blinking her eyes her eyes a few times and looking around. "Is this... what a mind meld looks like?" She had so many questions.

"It varies from person to person... but in the instance of T'Varel, yes. That represents the beginning of my meld with her consciousness... I suspect part of the flashing was because she was already fading so rapidly." Alex looked around. "This is the Ambassadors Suite for the Conference... I believe that the person across the desk from her is Commander Seya.

"Her security liaison," Remy confirmed. "Was there something relevant here do you think?"

"Commander Seya seemed to have some information for her, perhaps a warning of sorts. Let's see." Alex finished her adjustments to the program and then let it begin to play out, prompting the conversation between T'Varel and Seya to start. From surface indications it appeared to be a daily safety briefing but Alex was paying close attention to the surroundings and stepped toward the desk, noticing a PaDD sitting upon it that she hadn't when she was in the meld. She picked it up and looked over the screen, thankful that her mind had captured the words immediately on it. They detailed a threat that had been received to the Accords.

The Captain nodded as she read the note. "Our Security team was made aware that there had been some threats ahead of the Accords. It's one reason why Major McEntyre was insistent on snipers."

Remy took in an uneasy breath. "There were mixed feelings about the decision." She shook her head.

"We don't know what killed her? We are positive wasn't poison?" Remy asked seeking reassurance. If it weren't, she didn't like the likely other possibilities.
