Sweet Treats, Not as Planned, Part 2
Timeline: Mission Day 11, 1830 hoursLocation: Sickbay, USS Astrea
Characters Present:
- LtJG Eirly Andersen
- Lt Commander Nash Winters
- Sara Winters
- Alexandra “Alex” Winters
- Brunel
- Nurse Charlotte Dawes
- Dr. Malcolm Beckett
- Dr. Olivia Parks
Following Brunel’s collapse after consuming Eirly’s pastries, the Ataran teenager is transported directly to Sickbay. Nurse Dawes performs an initial assessment, administering a hypospray to ease breathing while diagnostic scans are conducted. Nash explains the circumstances, noting that the incident occurred during Eirly’s visit with freshly baked treats.
Brunel’s convulsions abate with medication, but he remains unconscious. Eirly is overwhelmed with guilt, fearing she has jeopardized her relationship with Nash and his family. Nash reassures her, emphasizing that the incident was unavoidable and expressing gratitude for her care and kindness.
Dr. Beckett arrives to take over the medical evaluation, confirming that Brunel may have a food intolerance unique to Atarans and that his reaction was compounded by recent vaccination protocols. Medical staff initiate digestive enzyme treatment, allergy testing, and neural imaging, while maintaining a sterile environment for Brunel.
Dr. Olivia Parks later provides an update to Nash, Sara, and Alex, explaining that Brunel’s antibodies overreacted to the allergen, likely malic acid in apples, triggering a response to prior vaccinations. The child’s immune system is weakened, necessitating continued observation in a sterile environment. Gene therapy may be considered if recovery is incomplete, but doctors remain hopeful for natural resilience.
Throughout the ordeal, Eirly receives reassurance from Nash and Sara, highlighting the importance of trust, care, and understanding in working with the Ataran refugees. By the end of the chapter, Brunel begins to stir, indicating the first signs of recovery.
