Timeline: Mission Day 12, 1530 hoursLocation: Sickbay, USS Astrea — Intensive Care Division & Family Meeting Room
Characters Present:
- Alexandra Winters
- Brunel
- Lieutenant Eirly Andersen)
- Sara Winters
- Lt. Commander Nash Winters
- Captain Remy Johansen
- Dr. Malcolm Beckett
- Dr. J.R. McEntyre
- Nurse Charlotte Dawes
Alexandra arrives at Sickbay in a rush, bypassing friends and home, to check on Brunel. She finds Eirly sitting with him instead of her parents and is reassured that everything is fine. The two children share lighthearted conversation and milkshakes, offering Brunel comfort and normalcy despite his ongoing weakness and medical monitoring.
Meanwhile, in a separate family meeting room, Sara and Nash discuss Brunel’s treatment options with Doctors Beckett and McEntyre and Captain Johansen. The conversation emphasizes the rigid and limited maintenance protocol currently available, the potential resistance of Brunel’s body to treatment, and the impossibility of full recovery under Federation restrictions. The synth ban, which halted research on treatments involving positronic matrices, is highlighted as a significant barrier.
Remy confirms that she possesses prior research data from her 2385 studies on positronic matrices but cannot legally access or utilize it within the Federation without risking severe consequences. Plans to discreetly recover a compatible matrix from secure facilities on Earth are discussed, with strict limitations on who may be involved to maintain secrecy.
Nash and Sara reaffirm their trust in Remy to oversee the operation and their understanding of the need for discretion, while also focusing on immediate care for Brunel. Eirly is informed she may assist in security, with the goal of limiting the circle of participants and preventing exposure to Starfleet authorities.
After the tense discussion, Sara and Nash return to Brunel’s bedside, finding him content with Alexandra’s company. They enjoy cartoons and milkshakes together, including subtle nutritional supplementation from Charlotte. The family shares joyful moments as Brunel expresses happiness and relief, culminating in emotional affirmations of their impending official adoption and a sense of restored family unity.
Brunel eventually succumbs to exhaustion, resting peacefully while Sara and Nash take a brief respite, leaving Alexandra to continue her normal routines before returning to the room later.
