After being subdued in Lhasa, Kas is transported ahead of his comrades to a secretive mountain complex. Though heavily sedated, he maintains awareness long enough to analyze his captors — a Bajoran woman with some medical training, a gruff human commander, and a team of poorly disciplined contractors. Subjected to a brutal “death check” and the lingering effects of kayolane, Kas’s left eye sustains damage that requires immediate attention.

Brought before a Bajoran overseer in a lower-level chamber, Kas is questioned about his connection to Captain Remy Johansen and the purpose of their mission. He admits his longstanding loyalty to Remy and states that they are seeking a scientist to save a child under her care. Pressed further, Kas names Rebecca Lange, refusing to elaborate beyond that. He emphasizes his trust in Remy’s judgment rather than providing details of their mission.

Even as pain from his eye intensifies, Kas resists offers of “hospitality” and medical aid, demanding instead the return of his goggles to shield against the harsh light. Entering the meditative state of the Quath’Gi, he withdraws into the sacred texts of his people, using spiritual focus to limit the control his captors can exert. A physician, Dr. Phillips, tends to his injury under supervision, while guards secure him. Though food and water are left behind, Kas retreats deeper into his trance, waiting for the right moment and preserving both his strength and silence.
