Mission:
Maintenance and Recovery
Location: Deck 17: Marine Facilities
Timeline: MD 01: 0745 Hours, November 3, 2389
Captain Johansen's first notice that the Marine CO had requested a transfer came in after he'd already packed his gear and left the ship. He was gone as soon as the ship had docked at the station the night before. They had bumped heads in the past, but she didn't think it would have come to this.
With no further direction from the Marine Corps, she still felt an obligation to let the ranking officers know. If he hadn't told them himself, they would figure it out when he didn't show up for work - or when there was no duty roster.
She stepped into the Marine Command Center looking for either Lieutenant Martinez or Sergeant Ragnar. She was hoping to talk to both together.
Martinez was at one of the consoles when the Captain entered, shoulders slightly hunched as they worked their way through the morning reports. A small zip-clip had somehow found its way into their hand at some point, turning slowly between their fingers while they read, although they didn't seem particularly aware they were doing it. The doors opening drew their attention and they looked up, the clip going still when they saw who had walked in. They straightened, setting it down beside the console. "Captain." There was a brief glance past Johansen, more instinct than anything else, before their attention settled properly on her. An unexpected visit from the Captain usually had a reason behind it. "Everything alright?"
"Yes, nothing to worry about. I was hoping to catch you and Sergeant Grymblöd, if he's around." Remy replied matter-of-fact. "It appears that Major McEntyre has been reassigned, effective immediately. I thought the three of us should talk before I lose everyone to shore leave today."
Martinez's eyebrows pulled together at the words. Transfers happened and it explained why they had not seen the Major. Any emotional attachment to their Marine CO was pushed aside in favour of what was happening. They nodded and hit their combadge. "Lieutenant Martinez to Gunnergy Sergeant Grymblöd. Gunny, report to the MCC, Captain's here to see us." Their hand lowered and went behind their back again.
"Aye, sir." came the reply over the commbadge and only a minute or two passed before the door hissed open again and Ragnar stepped in. He stopped and rendered a salute as the door closed again. "Captain. LT. What's the news?"
Remy returned the salute, a habit she was learning to get used to now that was serving with Marines. "I was just telling the Lieutenant that Major McEntyre has been transferred, effective immediately," Remy explained. "He's left rather abruptly, so it will be up to the two of you to make the transition as smooth as possible. Of course, if there is anything that I, or Commander Spello can assist with, we're at your service."
Ragnar nodded; taking a moment to mull it over. "I can't say that I am completely surprised at the Major's departure. That being said... I had meant to collaborate with him on this but it seems the LT will be handling the division so..." he paused to shift his gaze and think for a moment longer. "...I want to shift the Marines to each have a shift or two a week with Astrea's Security Crewmembers. It will help to reduce the perceived gap between us and the rest of the ship."
Martinez considered it for a moment before nodding. "That could work. It gets the Marines working with the rest of the crew, and gives Security a chance to get used to how we work as well." They looked at Ragnar, meeting his eyes. "Talk to Security. See what they can fit into their rotation without leaving either side short, then bring it back to me." Their attention shifted back to the Captain, their fingers brushing briefly against the zip-clip they had left beside the console. "Do we know if Marine Command is sending a replacement, Captain? And if so, did they give an ETA?"
"I don't know," the Captain shook her head. "As far as I know the move was sudden, so there may not be a replacement lined up yet."
Remy looked around and then gestured that the three of them should move into the CO's old office for privacy.
Martinez glanced at Ragnar before giving a nod, following the Captain. The MCO's office was familiar ground for Martinez, even if they never felt relaxed there.
Ragnar gave a silent nod and fell into step behind Martinez. It was more out of habit than it was anything else. It was far from his first time in the office.
Once the three were in McEntyre's old office, the Captain was more forthcoming. "There were some conflicts early into the investigation into the Ambassador's death," she explained. "The Major was very vocal about his grievances and the way it was handled, there may be an inquiry."
"I don't think it's anything that either of you need to be overly concerned with," Remy explained. "Commander Spello and I have already agreed that there is no reason to not give whatever investigative authority should come out full cooperation. I'm simply telling you because I have a feeling that this is related to the Major's quick departure, and may slow down a replacement being sent."
"Yes, Captain," Martinez sounded a little more thoughtful as they reflected on the information. They knew the Major had strong opinions. An inquiry, or investigation, certainly...changed things. "I'll make sure that the transition is as smooth as it can be. The Marines will have questions..." because Martinez sure as hell would have had questions if they were in the shoes of the enlisted. So...they had to balance that too. They looked at Ragnar, taking a slow breath. "The Major got transferred. That's all we know right now." Their fingers shifted slightly at their side. "I don't want the Marines to start treating this as a conspiracy just because they have some downtime."
"There's no need for consipiracy theories, or for this to seem like any more extra down time than usual," the Captain said acknowledge Martinez's concerns. "Anytime we're in space for a while, I can understand where the Marine division can get a little antsy, and we've certainly been deployed a little outside what we were told Astrea's original mission was intended."
"If you think the Sergeant's idea of working with Security more will work out, that's a good start. I know Mr. Xalanth is generally amenable to changes and working with others," the Captain mentioned. "I know you also have some specialized officers that we may want to integrate with Intelligence and Operations also. We can make that happen."
Ragnar listened for a minute before answering. "I think we can avoid the conspiracies if we don't let them have the idle time to fabricate them for a few weeks. We should probably get with the security chief and work out some training scenarios as well." He paused; glancing around the room. "Guess the office is yours now LT; at least in the interim. Captain; does all of this have anything to do with the security threat to the crew? The marines may not need to know but if possible I would appreciate the information so I know what to filter out for them when they start asking questions."
"It likely doesn't," Remy stated, not believing that the incident between the Major and Commander Spello was a shipwide concern, nor was her decision to override the Major attempting to put an inexperienced Marine in command over a mission with more experienced officers several months earlier.
"As far as the security threat is concerned," the Captain continued. "As you know, we've had one Starfleet infiltrator. We don't know how widespread that is, but the fact that one was captured here isn't classified - it happened too out in the open. Our intruder made sure of that."
"I would definitely work with Commanders Keel, Xalanth, and Lieutenants Dorsainvil and Fulvia about how we go about training the crew in general for infiltration threats," she stated. "We need to proceed with caution or we train current infiltrators how to defeat the system. This will be the team on Astrea working on this."
"Understood; I will see about arranging a meet between the lot of us in the coming days." As he spoke Ragnar glanced between the Captain and the LT; changes of command, even sudden ones were not new to him but he never knew how they were going to affect his colleagues. Especially when those colleagues were as new as these.
"I trust you both," the Captain stated. "You both did great work during the last mission and worked well under less than ideal circumstances. I know the Marines tend to be a tight unit, so I'll let you handle the transition as you see fit, but whatever you need from Command, just let us know," she assured them.
"If there's nothing else, I'll leave you both to it then."
"Yes Captain," Martinez straightened up and saluted, looking at her for a moment. They made a mental note to sit down and look over any upcoming training.
